Canine-giene

Fall is upon us! As the weather gets cooler, the needs of your dog are going to change. Similarly to how you likely switch to a more hydrating moisturizer as the weather leaves your skin feeling dryer, your dog may need different care depending on the weather. From increased shedding to seasonal allergies, we've noticed many changes throughout the year with our pups.

Here are some canine hygiene tips based on the season:

Winter Hygiene

  • Coat care

    • Consider a doggy sweater for short-haired breeds

    • Regular brushing to maintain coat health

  • Paw care

    • Use protective wax or booties

    • Wash off salt and chemicals after walks (consider pet safe salt alternatives for your own home)

  • Bathing routine

    • Reduce frequency to avoid drying skin

    • Use moisturizing shampoos

Spring Hygiene

  • Check for ticks and fleas by regularly inspecting dog's coat (especially after walks through high grass)

  • Grooming adjustments

    • Brush out winter coat

    • You could start switching back to your regular bathing frequency

  • Clean paws after walks

    • Remove mud and debris

    • Check for cuts or irritations

Summer Hygiene

  • Keep the coat short

    • Regular trims

    • Use a de-shedding tool

  • Hydration

    • Be especially sure that your pup has constant access to fresh water

    • Monitor for signs of dehydration

  • Paw protection

    • Use protective balms

    • Avoid hot pavement

Autumn Hygiene

  • Manage shedding

    • Increase brushing sessions

    • Use anti-shedding shampoos

All year round I'd recommend, vet visits, ear cleaning, teeth cleaning, and staying up-to-date with your dog's flea, tick, and heart worm preventatives. Please remember that these are just general recommendations. Be sure to ask your vet for more specific advice that is tailored to your dog's breed, skin type, and fur type when changing your dog's care routine.

Well wishes & puppy kisses,

Akira
