The Comforts of At-Home Dog Care

Have some traveling to do and can't decide who's caring for your pup while you're away?

We get it, all the choices can be overwhelming! Boarding facilities are a good choice for some pet parents, and many offer solid pet care. However, if you want your four-legged friend to be treated like the royalty they are, at-home dog care may be the solution for you!

Here are a few things to consider when deciding whether to book at-home overnight care for your dog, whether it's overnight sitting at your home or boarding at the dog care provider's.

Individualized Care

Since pet hotels are caring for many dogs at once, the staff's attention will naturally have to be split amongst everyone. Activities like feeding, walks, and playtime must happen on the hotel's schedule, not yours.

When you choose at-home care, your pet is the sole focus of the visit! Their day-to-day routine gets to stay the same, and they will be the center of their care provider's attention.

Familiar Environment

Pets who frequent doggie daycare will often adapt better to staying overnight at a boarding facility, since their familiarity with the space and people working there makes it an easier transition. If your pup is more of a homebody, keeping them at home for overnight sitting while you're away means they won't have to get used to a new space.

Presence of Other Dogs

Even with separate rooms, dogs staying at a pet hotel will likely be exposed to a multitude of other dogs. Even if they do not participate in group play sessions, they will be able to smell, hear, and see other dogs staying at the facility. This can be stressful, especially for anxious or reactive dogs.

Reminder of Shelter Time

Animal shelters are an incredibly important part of animal-loving communities, but the experience of staying at a shelter is often scary for the pets they take in. Although both shelters and pet hotels will vary in their facilities, the environments may feel similar for rescued dogs. They can be more prone to anxiety in pet hotels, thinking they may have been dropped off at the shelter again.

We hope this helps the decision-making process! Pet hotels do have their upsides, especially for adaptable and highly social dogs, but at-home care is often easier for pets and their people alike. If you think at-home care is the right option for your pup, then click here to learn more.

I completely agree that at-home dog care can make such a difference for our pets’ comfort and happiness. It’s amazing how much calmer and healthier dogs are when they’re cared for in familiar surroundings.
